Beach Vacation 2013

We went back to the Sanderling area of the Outer Banks this year because we love the size of the island and the privacy that the area provides.   We found our perfect rental house last year, The Midas Touch, but missed out on renting for this year so we had to rent a different house.  We liked the decor, but it felt a little cramped and was a little farther walk to the beach.  The week wasn't the easiest (even though we were all eagerly anticipating this "relaxing" vacation).  Hannah and Owen and Mommy were sick pretty much the whole week with a really bad cold (so please excuse all the snotty nose pictures).  This put a damper on our week, but we tried not to let it keep us from having fun.

Hannah and Owen did great sleeping in a new environment while being sick and they loved spending the week with Nana, Grandad, Uncle Jake, and Cooper.  They liked the beach equally as much as last year, but were not as daring as we thought they'd be around the water.  Hannah's favorite thing again this year was to sit in her little pool and fill and dump bucket after bucket full of water.  Their favorite time to be on the beach was after dinner.  They were completely different kids on the beach in the evening and enjoyed playing the most during this time.  We were out on the beach plenty of mornings, but it was just too hot for them (Owen especially).  Owen spent most of his beach mornings sleeping and Mommy said...let him sleep!  After two weeks of no naps his body needed the rest and sleep he did sometimes for 3 hours at a time!  Owen really liked digging in the sand and filling buckets of water from the ocean.  Both liked kicking the ball to Cooper on the beach.

I will try to capture the week day by day and apologize for all the pictures as I have so many that are my favorites!

Day 1:

Daddy and Owen get their shovels and trucks dirty right away!
Owen loved being such a big boy and drinking from a water bottle like everyone else.

Daddy helps Hannah learn how to throw her new frisbee.

This is the only family shot we managed to get during the week as Hannah and Owen always seemed to be on the go and moving in separate directions.

Day 2:

After a rough night of Hannah's nonstop coughing and little sleep we made it out onto the beach.  Poor Hannah girl just couldn't stop coughing.  We tried a nebulizer treatment, going outside, and Daddy went to the grocery store at 1:30 am for honey and saline mist.  Finally around 3/4 am she fell into a fitful sleep, but woke up sounding much better even if she was tired.  Watch out Mommy...after a night of Hannah coughing in your face this cold is headed your way fast!

Owen and Daddy dig out a tunnel for Owen's trucks and he lines them up inside.

Hannah fills one of many buckets as she spent time each day filling and emptying bucket after bucket.

After a lot of playing Owen falls asleep sitting up while eating his snack.
We lay Owen back for a much needed snooze.

Day 3:

The heat on this day is too much for Owen and he quickly falls asleep in my arms...
 my sweet baby boy...
it is in these moments that I still see the baby I brought home from the hospital asleep in his car seat.

The highlights of day 3 were our dinner and our evening on the beach:
Uncle Jake and Daddy cook up a steam pot.  Add some steamed shrimp to the mix and we had one of the best beach dinners of the week!

After dinner we returned to the beach and discovered what a difference the evening temperatures make for Hannah and Owen.

 A beautiful night...
 Uncle Jake and Hannah
Grandad and Owen kick the ball to Cooper who loves, loves, loves the beach!

We discover our sand castle from earlier is still standing...
until Owen turns into the sandcastle smasher!

Hannah peers into every hole she can find for a sand crab.
Oh and she sticks her finger in too hoping to see one run out!
Daddy and Owen play by the water's edge.
 Grandad and Owen play football.

We leave the beach tired and ready for bed.

Day 4:

 Our bathing beauty

After a rough start despite the pictures above Hannah settles down to rest until I decide to move her to a beach towel...
 then she erupts in tears.
These were not the first of the week, but that is life when you're 2!
Daddy spends some time in the water away from the 2 year old tears and Mommy's uncontrollable cough.
Owen wants some time in the water with Daddy.  Owen's idea of playing in the water was to say, "I want to get in the water" and then as soon as his feet hit the water he asked to be picked up!

Snacks on the beach are so yummy!
She's as sweet as the strawberries she's eating!

Owen continues his run of naps on the beach...this really cracked me up considering I couldn't get him to lay still for 10 seconds on his bed!

Another evening of playing on the beach (with such great pictures that I can't help but post them):

Hannah and Grandad kick the ball to Cooper.

Hannah is back in her pool with her clothes on.  Mommy said to sit on the bucket and not in the pool, but she still managed to be soaking wet when we left.  Hannah played for hours with our squirty animals.  She would get them all sandy and then wash them off in the buckets of water.

Nana helped make lots and lots of cake-all kinds of flavors!

Mommy and Daddy get served up lots and lots of sand cake!

 Hannah poses for the camera!

Goodnight beach...thanks for another great day of fun!

Day 5:

This morning we had a leisurely start to the day and decided to hit some shops in Corolla and go to the beach later in the afternoon.  Hannah and Owen had fun trying out all the hammocks at the hammock shop and playing on the playground.  After we left the shops we went to the Duck Fire Department to buy t-shirts and see the fire trucks...luckily they were pulling back in from a call as we were leaving so we did get to see them.

The guys all engrossed in their technology (cell phones for Uncle Jake and Daddy and a new Kindle puzzle app for Owen).

We hit the beach after naps and an early dinner for Hannah and Owen.  Yes, Owen took a nap today...not on the beach, but on the floor in his room on a beach towel!  This week has seriously made me consider turning his bed at home into a sandbox (anything to preserve naptime)!

Can you hold any more buckets Owen? I think he had plans to fill them all with water.
 Maybe just one will do.

We head back to the house after our afternoon on the beach.  I had to include a picture of the wagon that we hauled back and forth each day.  Wow, we needed a lot of stuff.  Thanks for being the pack mule for the week Daddy!

Day 6 (Our last beach day):

By the last day we were all feeling better and decided to make a long day on the beach (forgoing naps if needed).  We packed snacks and lunch for Hannah and Owen and headed out to make the most of the gorgeous day.

It doesn't get prettier than this!

Owen smashes his last sandcastles for the week.

Owen does it again...a lovely little beach nap!
Hannah looked up and saw Nana reading a magazine (one of Hannah's favorite things these days) and said, "I need to look at Nana's magazine!".  She spent a good 30 minutes looking at all the rooms and talking about the colors and the things she saw.  She is such a funny girl!
Hannah and Owen love to jump in puddles left after a good rain so in the last hour on the beach Daddy and Nana dug holes in the sand for the ocean to create big mud puddles to jump in.  Hannah and Owen had a blast with this!
It wasn't the easiest week, but we sure had a good time and made some great memories.
We were blessed to be able to take two really awesome vacations this year and have such precious time with our munchkins who continue to grow more and more each day.  There were times this week when I would look at them and think where did my babies go and then see them flying through the air in Chris' arms and think they are still my babies.
