On Monday, November 15th, after 4 nights and 5 days in the hospital we were finally able to leave the hospital and take Hannah and Owen home. Chris and I were very tired of staring at the hospital walls and were looking forward to establishing our own schedule with Hannah and Owen even though it took me a couple of weeks to relax about their feeding and sleeping routine. Hannah wore the same pretty pink outfit home that I did when my mom brought me home from the hospital, but she had a new sweater and hat to keep her warm in the questionable November weather. Owen wore a blue romper that was very similar to Hannah's (the same brand in fact) that Chris wore when his mom brought him home from the hospital. Owen had a sweater and hat that matched Hannah's. Everything was way too big for our little ones, but it was so fun to dress them up to make the 5 minute ride home from the hospital. The thing I remember most about the day are the tears that flowed uncontrollably as we buckled them in their car seats, headed down the hallway, and waited for Chris to bring the car around. I'm sure everyone who passed thought that I was worried about taking 2 babies home and the responsibility of caring for them on our own, but I couldn't have been more excited about that. I was really emotional about the reality of finally bringing home my own babies, our precious gifts, our dream come true.
Hannah and Owen were perfect babies on their first night home. After carefully picking out their nighttime gown and sleep sack and putting on their hats to keep them warm we settled in for the night. Hannah and Owen slept in their cradles, one on each side of our bed, and we went to sleep although we slept very lightly as we listened to each sound they made. They of course woke up or I woke them up every 2 hours to eat and Hannah had a moment of unconsolable crying, but some extra formula supplementation settled her back down and back to sleep.
