Two Months Old-January 2011

At two months old we are all smiles now.  Hannah and Owen have been smiling in their sleep since December, but now they smile upon recognizing mommy and daddy and when they are happy.  Owen smiles all the time and his smiles light up his whole face…he loves to smile and does so with his whole body.  Hannah is a bit more serious and you have to work hard to win smiles from her, but when you do they are so sweet.  She smiles with a grin and sometimes her whole mouth open.  Her eyes light up to accompany her smiles.
They really enjoy going for walks, but are often so warm and comfy that they fall right asleep.  They are grabbing at things on their play gym and they also like the change of scenery and new position that their bouncy seats offer them.
Hannah all bundled up for a walk.  These were the coolest sweaters because they zip up the back.
 We like our froggy bouncers!

 Happy boy!
 Look at that face!
Owen's hair leads itself well to mohawks and Aunt Vic has given him one even though Mommy and Daddy have said never to this popular hairstyle.
 Looking a little mischeivous...

This is what we call "milk drunk".
Worn out!
The Hospital...again!
Owen spent another week on the pediatric floor at St. Mary's hospital this month.  I couldn't believe it was happening again.  We were so careful not to expose them to germs or go out in public too soon and then I found myself driving to St. Mary's yet again.  This time Owen had a random infection that needed to be treated with IV antibiotics.  He had been fussy and easily agitated in the morning and by midday when he didn't want to eat and was spitting up a lot I knew something wasn't quite right, but I couldn't put my finger on it.  We were spending the day with my mom and were at her house in New Kent.  She was pulling things together to come and spend the night since Owen seemed out of sorts.  When I went to change his diaper he was very swollen in his diaper area (for his sake in the future I'll leave it at that).  I knew something was seriously wrong and called the pediatricians office and left immediately for an appointment.  He had a fever of 100.5 at the doctor's office.  We saw Dr. Hassen who is not our pediatrician, but sent us to St. Mary's the first time when Owen had his surgery.    She gently put her hand on my shoulder and said I'm really sorry to tell you this again, but he needs IV antibiotics in the hospital...and the chain of events unfolded again.  I called Chris to tell him we were headed to the hospital and quickly went home to pack my bags and wait for my in laws to come and keep Hannah (poor Hannah!)  She was well taken care of and loved on by grandma and grandpa, but I couldn't help worry and wonder what she thought about where mommy and daddy were and more importantly where Owen was and why it was so quiet in her room.
This time we had to go to the ER (again my mom was with me) and be admitted.  We spent over 2 hours in the pediatric ER.  I was a nervous wreck that Owen was going to catch something else (remember it was January and just a curtain away families rolled in with the flu, pneumonia, and rsv) on top of what he was dealing with.  I couldn't wait to get up to the pediatric floor and ended up pestering the nurses to get us out of the ER.  The nurses were very good as this time I had to comfort and help hold Owen while they put in his IV, but they were great and it went in on the first try...poor little guy.  We finally got up to our room and settled by about 1am, my mom and I went to move my car from the ER lot, and we ate crackers and cheese for dinner that we grabbed at the last minute running out of the house.  My mom was a lifesaver and so were my in laws.  Chris had some important work scheduled in North Carolina and he had already used so much time that we decided he stay down there and work.  My mom stayed with me 2 nights and 2 days and helped me keep Owen comfortable as he and the antibiotics fought the infection (one not typicially seen in boys until high school age).  Aunt Vic (who is our family nurse :o) ) came up one day and took good care of Owen so I could shower and spend some time with Hannah.  I so appreciated everyone's prayers and support.  Chris made it back into town the day that Owen was discharged.  He came just in time for a test they wanted to do using dye and an x-ray machine.  We had to put on lead jackets and Owen was strapped to a board that made reminded us of rotisserie chicken while they moved him back and forth and checked his internal plumbing.
As usual Owen was a little trooper.  He has an amazing disposition and spent most of his awake time smiling and playing.  He flirted with the nurses and gave me lots of smiles once he started feeling a little better.  I was a little more prepared this time and brought my own blankets and his comfort objects from home which made night time a little easier.  The nurses were not happy to see us again and told Owen he could have just sent some pictures or a Christmas card.  Our wonderful pediatricians came to see us while making rounds on the labor and delivery floor.  As a new mom, I, of course, worried how it looked that my 2 month old son had been in the hospital 2 times and more importantly I wanted him better and for us to be back at home with Hannah!  Here are pictures from Owen's second (and hopefully last) hospital stay.

The splint is where his IV is placed.  They splint it so that he can't pull it out.

Sweet Boy!
